Monster Hunter Emerald

Pokemon Monster Hunter Emerald is what Monster Hunter and Pokémon fans have been asking for since Monster Hunter Stories proved the concept could work — and then didn't quite go far enough. TheNadei spent 20 months building this, eight of them with a dedicated team, to finally answer the question properly.

Every single Pokémon encounter in Hoenn has been replaced by a creature from the Monster Hunter franchise. Fatalis. Lagiacrus. Odogaron. Shogun Ceanataur. Abyssal Lagiacrus. Over 100 monsters in total, each with custom front sprites, shiny variants, and team icons drawn specifically for this hack. The Emerald story, gym structure, and world remain intact. What changes is what you fight, catch, and hunt.

About Pokemon Monster Hunter Emerald

The idea of a Pokémon-style Monster Hunter game has circulated in both fanbases for over a decade. Monster Hunter Stories scratched part of that itch — the monster-collecting, the bond mechanic — but it was its own game with its own identity rather than the thing people were actually asking for, which was: what if Monster Hunter's creatures showed up in a Pokémon game and you built teams from them?

TheNadei had no prior ROM hacking experience and no background in sprite art when they started this project. What they had was 20 months, a growing team of collaborators, and a clear goal. The result is a complete Pokémon Emerald playthrough where every single creature you encounter — in the wild, on trainer teams, as gym leader partners — is from the Monster Hunter franchise. Ratata is gone. Zigzagoon is gone. In their place: Jaggi, Velocidrome, Conga, Baggi, and over a hundred more.

The hack is explicitly a binary ROM hack — TheNadei's stated goal was not to change what Emerald is, but to change who populates it. The Hoenn story plays out exactly as it does in the original. What changes is the experience of encountering creatures you know from a completely different context, fighting them with the Pokémon battle system, and building teams from monsters with entirely new stat distributions, typings, and move pools.

🐲 What makes this different from other crossover hacks Most crossover ROM hacks are visual reskins — one creature replaces another cosmetically, and the mechanics stay identical underneath. Monster Hunter Emerald goes further: each monster has genuinely different stats, typing, and move access that reflects its Monster Hunter identity, creating team-building decisions that do not exist in any standard Pokémon game.

The Monster Hunter Roster

The heart of the hack is the roster. Over 100 monsters from across the Monster Hunter franchise have been implemented — from Small Monsters that fill the early-route slots to Large and Elder Dragons that sit at the top of the power curve. Building a functional team requires understanding how Monster Hunter's creature design logic translates into Pokémon battle roles.

Notable monsters in the game

🔥 Fatalis
⚡ Lagiacrus
🌊 Abyssal Lagiacrus
🐺 Odogaron
🦀 Shogun Ceanataur
🐒 Bishaten
🌟 Shagaru Magala

How the roster fills Emerald's roles

Small Monsters — early routes

Creatures like Jaggi, Baggi, and Conga fill the early-route and common-encounter slots. They are weaker individually but form the backbone of early-game teams, just as basic Pokémon do in standard Emerald.

Large Monsters — main progression

Deviljho, Tigrex, Barioth and other Large Monsters appear through the mid-game and serve as the primary power picks for competitive team-building across the main story.

Elder Dragons — endgame power

Fatalis, Shagaru Magala, and the Abyssal Lagiacrus represent the top of the power curve. Based on playtester data, Abyssal Lagiacrus and Shagaru became fan favourites — only one recorded team beat the game using Fatalis alone.

Custom sprites — original artwork

Every monster has a custom front sprite drawn for this hack, a shiny colour variant, and a team icon. Backsprites are not unique (due to the impossibility of drawing 200+ backsprites) but the front-facing presentation is fully original.

Mechanics & Changes

Beyond the roster swap, Monster Hunter Emerald makes targeted mechanical changes to modernise the battle experience and support the Monster Hunter creature logic.

Evolution Stones

The original evolutionary stones (Fire Stone, Water Stone, Moon Stone, etc.) have been replaced by five new stones designed around Monster Hunter's monster progression concept. Some monsters evolve through levelling as normal; others — those that have reached full maturity but need one final upgrade — use these stones. The stones become available for purchase in Markets at different points in the game as you progress, so you will not be gated out of evolutions for extended periods.

Physical/Special split

The Physical/Special split from Generation 4 onwards has been implemented. In standard Emerald, a move's category is determined by its type. Here, moves are categorised by their actual properties — meaning Fire-type moves can be Physical, Water-type moves can be Special, and so on. This fundamentally changes how many monsters function and is essential for understanding the true strength of the roster.

Level caps

Level caps are implemented to keep progression balanced across the hack. Rather than grinding past gym leader levels and trivialising encounters, the caps ensure the intended difficulty is felt throughout. The 999 Rare Candies in your PC give you fine-grained control over when and where you push to the cap without excessive route grinding.

Move updates and new moves

Several moves from Generation 4 and beyond have been added to the game. Existing moves have had their base power and effects updated to reflect their modern versions. Entirely new custom moves have also been created for this hack — designed to fit the Monster Hunter roster's unique combat identities rather than just pulling from the standard Pokémon move list.

📋 Read the documentation The game ships with a comprehensive spreadsheet covering all monster data: types, base stats, evolution methods, move pools, and details on every mechanical change. Given how different the roster is from standard Emerald, reviewing the documentation before and during your playthrough is strongly recommended.

Who should play Pokemon Monster Hunter Emerald

  • Monster Hunter fans who have always wanted to play a Pokémon-style game built around MH's creature roster — this is as close as any fan project has come to that experience.
  • Pokémon players who are curious about Monster Hunter and want to encounter its iconic creatures through a familiar battle system before investing in a full MH game.
  • Players who enjoy fresh team-building challenges — the monster roster has entirely different stat distributions and typing that force new approaches compared to any standard Pokémon game.
  • People who have replayed Emerald many times and want the familiar structure with a completely different set of creatures to encounter and build with.
  • Players interested in supporting first-time creators — TheNadei made this with no prior experience, and the quality achieved after 20 months is a genuine community achievement.

Tips for new players

  • Read the documentation before you start. The spreadsheet included with the hack covers every monster's types, stats, and evolution methods. The roster is 100+ creatures you probably do not know from a Pokémon context — knowing their actual typings will prevent a lot of early confusion.
  • The Physical/Special split changes everything. Do not assume a Fire-type monster is a Special attacker or a Water-type is a Special defender. Check the actual move categories before committing to a team role.
  • Swap your team often. TheNadei explicitly recommends this — the hack is designed with roster experimentation in mind. There is no canonical "best six" the way there might be in a standard Emerald run.
  • Use the Rare Candies intelligently. 999 Rare Candies are in your PC from the start. They are there to reduce grind, not to skip the challenge — use them to reach level caps cleanly without repetitive wild encounter farming.
  • Evolution Stones appear at specific market points. Track which towns have them available. Some monsters will be stuck in earlier forms longer than others depending on which stone they need — plan your team composition around this.
Other crossover hacks: For a lighter-toned crossover, try Super MarioMon (Pokémon × Mario, 2025). For a candy-world total conversion, Pokemon Sweet Version is the definitive creative hack of its kind.
